La Vall d'en Bas is one of the most scenic valleys in inland Catalonia, with a cluster of small villages, farmland, and easy access to the Pyrenean foothills. It's popular with cyclists and walkers, and the pace of life is slow and local.

La Garrotxa

La Garrotxa is best known for its volcanic landscape — more than 40 volcanic cones and lava flows, now covered in oak and beech forest. The Garrotxa Volcanic Zone Natural Park offers well-marked trails for all abilities, from easy walks between villages to full-day hikes. The medieval town of Santa Pau and the village of Besalú (a short drive away) are worth a visit.

Nearby towns

The village of Sant Esteve d'en Bas has a bakery, a bar, and basic day-to-day services. Olot (about 15 min by car), the capital of La Garrotxa, has a full range of supermarkets, restaurants, and a Wednesday market. Vic and Girona are both under an hour away.

Day trips

Girona city (old town, cathedral, Jewish quarter) is approximately 40 minutes by car. The Costa Brava coastline is reachable in under an hour. Barcelona is about 1h30 by car.
